The Tie That Bonds

Chapter 21

"What are you working on?" Trowa asked as he stepped further into the room.

"Next week we're starting a new chapter in History. Something caught my eye, so I decided to get a head start."

"What was it?"

"The fact that the first thing we're going to cover is the assassination of Heero Yuy." Trowa stared at the girl in shock.

"You're covering that?"

"Yeah. Why, is there something wrong with it?"

"It's just that. . .it was a Colony affair. . .I didn't think they would actually have it in Earth's text books."

"I asked Miss. Belgium. She says that it's something new that Earth schools are trying. The school board thinks that if we learn of this war and how brutal it was, then it won't be repeated. Which makes perfect sense once you think about it." She looked up into the deep green eyes. "Is something wrong Trowa?"

"Mia." Heero called and stood in the doorway. "Your friends are here."

"Thanks Heero." She logged off quickly and looked back up at Trowa. "Are you okay?" She asked so that only the two of them could hear. Trowa only nodded without looking at her. Heero waited until she was gone before stepping into the room.

"What's going on?" The Latin looked up at his lover's question.

Mia walked into the living room to find Sam making himself at home and Jessica searching the room thoroughly. She greeted Sam with a quick kiss before turning her attention to her other friend, who was now heading toward the study where Heero had disappeared to.

"Jess, maybe it would be better if you left them alone for right now."

"Why? Are they arguing?"

"No. I just have a feeling that's what they want. Besides, you came to study History, not Heero." With that, she grabbed Jessica's hand and dragged her back to the couch.

Though Mia tried to focus on the study session, she found it difficult. She couldn't stop thinking about how strangely Trowa had acted when she told him what they were going to study in History. There was something in the depths of his green eyes that worried her. Could it be possible that Heero was, in fact, related to the assassinated Heero Yuy? There was only one way to find out, and that was to ask Trowa as soon as she got a chance.

"If she doesn't ask then you won't have to explain anything." Heero stated matter of factly.

"What if she does? What am I suppose to say?. . .that we were both Gundam pilots?"

"Well, you've been honest with her this far."

"Why do I always get stuck explaining things to her?"

"You connect better with her."

"That's why when she was a baby, she always wanted you?" Trowa stared down at the picture frame on the desk. The photo was of the three of them when they had went camping last year during summer vacation. It wasn't often that either he or Heero allowed photos to be taken of them. . .but Mia had insisted. Heero stood behind the taller man and slipped his arms around the thin waist. His hold tighten to press the two bodies together.

"I promise that if she asks about this, I'll help you explain." He said softly and rested his cheek against Trowa's. The emerald eyes continued to stare at the picture. Though he had seen glimpses throughout Mia's childhood, looking at that picture right now settle the doubts in Trowa's mind. Mia looked too much like Heero to be ignored. . .however, the Japanese man didn't even seem to notice the resemblance. Still wrapped in the strong arms, Trowa picked up the picture and held it before them.

"Heero, why haven't you noticed?"

"Notice what? That it's off center?"

"No. I'm not talking about the picture. I'm talking about Mia." Heero looked over Trowa's shoulder at the photo.

"What?"

"She has your eyes Heero, your smile, she even picked up on your glare. You have the same color hair, and. . .how can you not notice that she looks so much like you."

"What are you implying Trowa?" Heero pulled from the embrace and stared at his boyfriend. "Are you trying to say that I cheated on you?"

"No. What I'm saying is that she's not like normal teenagers. She's incredibly strong. She's extremely intelligent; and it's not just now. . .she's always been that way."

"We raised her. What'd you think she'd be?. . .weak and stupid?"

"You ever wonder why our front porch?"

"Trowa."

"Why not Duo, or Quatre, or even the Preventers."

"Because we would have done a better job and we did."

"But. . ."

"I don't want to argue about this Trowa."

"I don't either, but I refuse to believe that these questions never bothered you."

"I'm not saying they didn't, but trying to find reason behind them is like trying to explain why we were forced into soldiers. . .why we were cursed with the lives we had to live. It just is. All we can do is deal with it." Trowa grew silent, and Heero knew that there was more to his questions than what he was saying. Closing the gap, he pulled the Latin back into his arms. "Why, all of a sudden, do you need answers for everything? Before, you use to just accept the way life is and move on."

"I don't know. . . .I guess I just want her to at least be one of ours."

Trowa's eyes opened as he rolled over to find that Heero was gone. The clock proclaimed it to be four in the morning. Fully awake, he pulled on his jeans and set out to find Heero. The Japanese man was in the study, working on the computer. Smiling to himself, Trowa stood behind his lover.

"Do you ever just relax?"

"Yes. It's called sex." Heero assured as he pulled Trowa onto his lap. "I want you to look at this." At the request, Trowa's eyes turned toward the screen. There were eleven pictures on the screen. Nine men and two women. Trowa instantly recognized them as the people who have been attacking them since Amelia was dropped off in their care. "I gather their files from police reports. After studying their profiles, I haven't been able to make any kind of connection between them. They all seem like normal people with normal occupations: lawyer; teacher; salvage yard worker; janitor; none of them have anything in common."

"Meaning that they probably had their backgrounds cleaned to look normal."

"Finding out who's behind this is going to be tougher than I thought. . .but I'll find them. . .and when I do. . ."

"Don't you mean 'we'?" Trowa asked and turned toward his partner.

"No. You have to stay and protect Amelia in case they find us before I find them."

"But. . ."

"Trowa, you and Mia are everything to me. I won't have anything happen to either of you."

"Damnit." Mia growled and punched her locker. Under the force, it became unjammed and opened. "Of all lockers for me to get, I stuck with the one that don't want to open half the time."

"Well, you do have a way with it. I wouldn't be too surprised if the locker doesn't make it to senior year." Jess giggled as Mia pulled out the books she needed.

"Hey Mia." The two friends turned to find Basil standing behind them. "Auditions for the school play are this afternoon. I didn't see your name on the list this time. Aren't you trying out?"

"Not this time Basil."

"Why not?"

"Because I have basketball practice."

"Well you had basketball practice last year and you still did it." Basil pointed out and the three friends started walking toward class.

"Yeah, but this year I might make co-captain, so I want to focus on that. Besides, my biology grade is slipping."

"How bad is it?" Jess asked.

"It's a 'C'."

"That's not too bad."

"It is in Heero's eyes." Mia answered as her eyes fell on a blonde haired boy that she had never seen before. As if knowing that she was approaching, he turned from his locker to greet her with the most beautiful shade of green eyes that she had ever seen before. The conversation between the friends ended as they walked by the new boy, and took up again after they had pass.

"Who the hell was that?" Jess asked and looked back again. "He's almost as gorgeous as Heero."

"That's Yuji." Basil informed as he too took a second glance. "He moved in next door to me over the weekend."

"You are so lucky."

"Who are you telling? I got to watch him move in. . .and girl believe me when I tell you he is built."

"Basil, you have to introduce me to him."

"No way. Not until I find out if he's available for me." At that moment, Mia's silence snagged the attention of her companions.

"Mia, are you okay?" Jess asked in concern.

"Mia, you're starting to turn blue, you need to breath." Basil informed, snapping the dazed teen back to reality. "What's gotten into you?" Jess gasped as she stopped dead in the hall and seized Mia's arm.

"Don't tell me you find him that attractive." The smile on Jess' lips was of mischief.

"Hey, don't forget about Sam." Basil reminded. "He's a good guy. You wouldn't want to hurt him, would you?"

"Basil, it was just looking. Looking never hurt anyone. Even you said that Yuji's hot. Mia?" Mia stared at the floor a moment. She wasn't exactly sure what seeing Yuji made her feel. . .and that fact made her uneasy about the new boy.
